Johannes Brahms Museum

Peterstraße 39, Hamburg


A Grade I listed typical Hamburg merchant's house from 1751 houses since 1971 the Brahms Museum Hamburg, which is run by volunteers. It is located near the destroyed in 1943 birthplace of Johannes Brahms. Initiator and carrier of the museum is the Johannes Brahms Society Hamburg. In the representation of the life and work of the famous composer of the focus of the presentation is on the nearly three decades in which Brahms in Hamburg received his musical training as a pianist and composer and already created groundbreaking works. Only at the age of 29 years, in September, 1862, he embarked on his first trip to Vienna - the former world capital of music. Here he was to find a second home for the rest of his life.
